How to be Irreplaceable at Work

Companies are often in short supply of talent required to drive systems, processes and people forward. They crave for individuals that work outside the lines of their job description to help the company succeed in general. If you are an individual thinking “How can I be indispensable in my company?” then the answer lies in identifying problems as opportunities to learn and progress. A lot of people who notice a problem fail to take up the initiative to own it and build up value.

Here is a list of possible things you could do to make yourself indispensable to your company:

Be a master of mission critical work. Perhaps, the easiest trick to become indispensable is to ensure that you do work that really matters to the company. If you shoulder mission critical tasks which have a significant revenue contribution you can demonstrate your significance to the company easily.

Be known for a particular skill. It is easy to make yourself indispensable to a company especially if you have a unique skill. Individuals who command a mastery over a certain skill cannot be replaced easily. This monopoly will make your boss think twice before letting you go.

Go the extra mile. Striking a balance between shouldering extra responsibility while handling your current responsibility is a challenge. But if you have time and capacity to give a little more than expected, then it can go a long way in making you a vital cog in the machine.

Be a great person. Everyone likes working with someone who gives them good vibes. No one enjoys working with a colleague who is grumpy, rude or carries a frown on their face. You might be good at what you do, but if your bad behaviour is the talk of the corridor then you are dispensable.

We are all cogs in the machines, but some of us are more vital than others. Everyone can be replaced, but to be indispensable means that you are so good at your job, that your boss and colleagues find it challenging to replace you. If you are an expert in your work and take pride in what you do, then you might want to cash-in on your chops and throw some weight around.

Being indispensable is a sure fire way to earn respect and bolster your job security, but it comes at a cost. You have to constantly live up to high expectations since your reputation is always at stake. If you fail, even ever slightly, your failures might be more noticeable. There is a lot of pressure to get stuff right nearly every time as people have developed unreasonable expectations.
